Trademark History
Trademark regulation in the UAE began with Federal Law No. 37 of 1992, later updated by Federal Law No. 36 of 2021, which introduced major improvements to trademark protection. The Ministry of Economy oversees registration, and the UAE is a member of the Paris Convention and the Madrid Protocol. The registration process is now fully digital, and a trademark registered in the UAE is valid across all seven emirates.
Requirements
- Power of attorney legalized up to UAE Consulate level
- Certified copy of priority document (if priority is claimed)
- Original Power of Attorney required for all new filings (as of April 2014)
- Opposition must be filed within 30 days of publication
- All major actions (assignment, change of name) require legalized PoA
Registration Process
Prepare Documents
Prepare a legalized Power of Attorney, representation details, and a clear representation of the mark.
File Application
Submit the application electronically through the Ministry of Economy's digital portal.
Examination (30–90 days)
The Trademark Office examines for formal and substantive compliance. 78% of applications pass without objection. A premium One-Day Trademark Examination service (AED 2,250 extra) is available since 2026 for urgent cases.
Publication (30-day opposition)
The mark is published for 30 days. Any interested party may file a written opposition to the Ministry within this period.
Registration Certificate
After the opposition period ends without challenge, the registration certificate is issued within 3–4 months.
