A business can own several types of intellectual property at once: a brand name, a technical invention, a product design and original creative work. Egyptian IP Law No. 82 of 2002 provides the legal framework for these rights. Start by identifying the asset you need to protect, then build the records needed to support the appropriate application or claim.
The four books of Law 82/2002
The law separates its subject matter into four books: patents, utility models, integrated-circuit layouts and undisclosed information; trademarks, trade names, geographical indications and industrial designs; copyright and related rights; and plant varieties. This structure is recorded in WIPO Lex’s description of the law.
Match the asset to the right question
- Brand: What name or sign identifies your products or services?
- Invention: What technical problem does your solution address?
- Design: Which visual features of the product need attention?
- Creative work: Who created the material, and what agreements document its ownership?
Prepare a separate record for each asset. A logo file, an engineering drawing and a written work should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.
Use the current text when reviewing a legal issue
WIPO Lex’s current record includes the Arabic text amended through Law No. 178 of 2020; its English text is the 2002 reference version. Check the relevant provisions and amendments rather than relying on an isolated article number from an older summary.
Build a practical IP record
- Record the owner’s exact legal name and contact details.
- Keep dated copies of artwork, designs and technical documents.
- Retain contracts with employees, designers, developers and suppliers.
- Store filing receipts, registration certificates and official notices together.
- Assign responsibility for reviewing notices and maintaining the file.
If a concern has already arisen, collect the correspondence and supporting material before the review. Separate what you can document from what still needs confirmation.
